I'm Already Picky

I have strong opinions about baby things in the same way I had strong opinions about my wedding.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Where are you looking???

No cheesy/zany engagement shots, no ring flash, no receiving line (who invented that anyway????), no cheesy first dance song, no "naughty" garter fetching, no staged photography....the list goes on and on. Our wedding turned out to be a very fun, real, and casual event filled with lots of dancing and good times.

When I was in Babies R Us with Tinger I found myself having the same thoughts: no, no, no, no! I don't like any of it. Am I really that picky, or is this stuff cheesy? I think one problem is that I'm not cheesy, cutesy, or fluffy--at all. I find most baby stuff is just that.

Yes!

No!

No!

Socks that look like saddle shoes, ballerina slippers or Chuck Taylors--Yes!

No!

Creepy/unnatural baby pictures--No!

And last, but certainly not least--the ginorm gerber daisy headband. No, no, no, no, no.

Hand-hearts around belly button--always a no in my book.

Weigh in, please. Am I picky? Just anti-cheesy? Am I in for a rude awakening? Will I be at the mercy of my kid? Help me.

Ditto for me! Help me pick out a hip new diaper bag.
My daughter will never where Dora unless I'm already dead.

I am with you on everything... especially the huge head flower things- creepy!

This had me laughing hard. I agree on everything. And yes--you are right--so much stuff out there is sooo cheesy especially at Babies R us. You have to pay more to get the nice stuff but at least it's out there.

I have to tell you though, there will come a time when your two year old begs for Buzz Lightyear light up shoes and you will throw all sense of style out the window and buy them because you love him and he wants them so badly.

But you can say no to A LOT of stuff!

as per our discussion last night, & to reiterate what brooke said...somehow, someway, a my little pony or princess shirt will find its way into their dresser. trust me - i'm SO ANTI-character clothing, but it just happens on occasion.
other than that, ditto.

Agree on everything - which is why my mom made my baby bedding and I own a diaper bag that costs way to much! I hate the flower headband - but do love a little bow headband:)
A few other things I dont understand - matching sleeper and blanket sets, way to coordinating! and babies with grown out hair that isnt even (mullet or old man hair) just to say your baby has hair. My little one is due for a haircut soon since the back is growing faster than the top. Bad hair is worse than no hair in my book!

Oh and I am a fan of the week belly shots, but always covered never nakey belly. Seriously nobody wants to see that.

No- you're right on track! I was naive and got the ginormous stroller that carries around everyone's crap plus my lazy teenage sibling's crap and truly regretted it. I have since moved on.

As for character clothing- I limit it to one pair of pajamas and underwear, and even then, I have to cringe a little.

I'm so excited for you!

You are fine. For now. I have LOTS of awesome sites for baby stuff that doesn't suck. Hit me up.

Also, Brooke is right. The other day, my almost 2 year old dressed himself. He wore his easter tie over a brown polo with Thomas the Tank Engine rain slicker, rain boots on the wrong feet and my husbands black ski hat. I was mortified. The worst part? I still thought he looked cute. And ridiculous.

First off, congratulations! Now for the bad news. All those character things to which you said no are the things your child is really going to ask you for and you probably will not be able to say no. Even if you do one of the grandparents will get it for them and they will want to wear it to school, to play, to church, to bed, and wear it the next day. Now on the stroller thing and the diaper bag thing I'm with you 100%. I had nice diaper bags and killer strollers. Kind of a necessity in Europe though.

I should probably comment twice-
First of all on your last post- CONGRATULATIONS! I am thrilled for you guys. You're gonna have one lucky kid with you and Lance for parents!!!

I ditto lots of that, although I am a fan of headbands- just not ginormous flowers. I like little ones and bows. I don't like bows stuck on with karo syrup or a glue stick or whatev.
I'm super picky about shoes too- cuz I hate the light up ones and character stuff. Beware of grandparents though. My mom is pretty classy- but she has been known to get a character thing here and there.
Can't wait to hear the gender news. ARe you waiting or gonna spill it.
What's your thoughts on naming baby before it's born.
I want to hear more- I love posts like this. You and Brooke know how to shake things up with your true colors. LOVE it!

Yes, I am also anti character and pretty much anti-T-shirts with the sayings on them-- "my mom is hotter than your mom" u get the picture. I don't mind bibs with sayings so much, its so temporary.

It seems like its hard to escape the reign of Dora and Diego-- they are like everywhere (car seat covers!!!). But hopefully they will pass out of the main kidosphere by the time my kid reaches that age?? I mean you can have anything with Dora on it -- ick.

There are sooo many kids clothing shops in Valley Fair mall, not to mention every other mall so you should be fine and I think your kid will evolve just fine with out characters. (I like the Pumpkin Patch store.)

One thing to consider is the music/shows your kid will be exposed to, I'm pretty much anti-cartoons for jax, but if anything, I would prefer he watch Looney Toons... I would say, stay away from "Yo Gabba Gabba" type shows -- so creepy.

Hello I lurk from Brookes blog :-)
There is really cute stuff for babies and I recommend you dress them exactly how you want for the first two years because after that ... its what Brooke said.
Congratulations ... new babies are very exciting.
